Just north of Santa Barbara is the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The valley has around 120 wineries that are open to the public, and all are close enough to Los Angeles to make for a great day trip. While they don’t offer tours of their winery or vineyard, Topa Mountain Winery’s tasting room is open to the public. While special wine tastings and food pairing classes must be reserved ahead of time, there’s still so much to see if you show up the day of the festival, like the grape stomping competition. Every month, the winery chooses one of its wine flights to support a different charity. When visiting the tasting room, guests can choose a charity wine flight, or another selection from the wine list. Proceeds from charity flights are granted to the specific organization each month.
McClain Cellars produces wine with grapes from the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County, but the winery’s tasting rooms are located in Laguna Beach. It is the only black-owned winery in Santa Barbara and Orange Counties, and produces 31 varietals of wine. Akash is the ideal place to spend a leisurely afternoon outside.
